"The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe, the less taste we shall have for destruction." – Rachel Carson
Okay, I’m not sure I can really limit it to ten, but I’ll give it a shot.
Generally speaking, July is my 2nd least favorite month (with February at the top of the list). In a “normal” summer (this summer has not been at all normal), July is hot, humid, dry, pest-ridden, and the late spring-early summer perennials have had their heyday and the borders are looking alot like the day after the party…This year, with all of the rain and cooler temperatures, plants are running a little behind bloom schedule and the Japanese beetles, bless their voracious appetites, have just arrived. As a result, this year’s July line up is a mixed bag with some early summer blooms still hanging in there.
In not any particular order, my top ten blooms for July are:
Thank you for joining in and giving us your Ten Favourite July plants. What a lovely selection and lovely photographs. I am very taken with your rose, it is similar to my favourite Lady Emma Hamilton. Thank goodness we don’t have Japanes beetle here, it is bad enough dealing with lily beetle.
Sadly we seem to get them all! Rose chafers, Japanese beetles, lily beetles and the list goes on. Particularly challenging as an organic gardener, but thankfully most plants seem to come through unscathed.
Love your selections! Carding Mill is gorgeous – I love all of the Austin peach and apricot roses, but I don’t have this one. I agree about shasta daisy ‘Becky’ – reliable and always stands up straight. – mine just started blooming a few days ago.
The west coast is also trying to figure out this year’s weather pattern. Spring was cold and wet but no in July it’s hot making it difficult to keep our thirsty plants watered. Love your photos
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the photos! The garden is heading into its 2-3 weeks of midsummer lull before the late summer/fall bloomers really take over. Maybe I can get caught up with my weeding in the interim 🙂 Sorry to hear you’re finding yourself in a hot and dry spell right now. we just returned from a short trip to southern CA – way too hot and dry; I swore to myself I’d never complain about our rain again 🙂
Great choices and such jewel-like colours. I love the look of your Heliopsis helianthoides ‘Summer Nights’, but not your experience of it falling over!
I know. The falling over bit is such a pity, because it really is an adorable flower. If I had a marvelous wall or thick hedge behind it, as many of your gardens in the UK do, they might prove less troublesome.

Thank you, and yes, I love seeing how the gardens in various areas of the world are progressing. Your garden is easily a month or so ahead of mine.
